As a devoted tennis enthusiast, there is nothing like attending a major tennis tournament. However, this past weekend I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the Laver Cup all thanks to the Global Watch Company (GWC), right here in my hometown of Vancouver.
For those unfamiliar with the event, the Laver Cup is a prestigious tennis tournament that assembles some of the world’s top tennis players to compete in a unique team format. Inspired by the Ryder Cup, it was co-founded by the tennis legend Roger Federer and named in honour of the iconic Rod Laver. Having previously graced cities like Boston, Geneva, Prague and London, this event has become a highlight of the tennis calendar, one I could not wait to experience firsthand here in Vancouver.
Day 1, Thursday, September 21: The Opening Ceremony
The Laver Cup 2023 began with a spectacular opening black-tie gala at the Vancouver Convention Centre, that set the tone for the weekend ahead. The black carpet was rolled out to welcome notable guests like Roger Federer, Bill Gates, Stan Smith, David Foster and his wife Katherine McPhee, among others. The atmosphere was electric as tennis stars from Team World and Team Europe, along with the team’s captains John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg arrived in style ready to celebrate. The night featured music by British Columbia’s own David Foster and continued with laughter, jubilation and a deep appreciation for tennis history paying tribute to the sports legends. It was truly a night etched in memory.

Day 2, Friday, September 22: Opening Day of the Tournament
The atmosphere was charged as fans packed Rogers Arena. In a sea of blue and red the signature black court took centre stage as Fils and Shelton embarked in the first singles match of the tournament.
I had the privilege of being a guest of Global Watch Company (GWC), providing access to Friday’s sessions in Rolex Vancouver’s signature VIP lounge. The lounge elevated the whole experience of watching the matches with its welcoming space furnished in blacks, greens and gold, decorated by Rolex’s signature yellow florals and tennis-inspired tributes. To top off the suite experience food was catered by the Top Table Group’s finest restaurants and champagne sponsored by Moet & Chandon.
The highlight of the Rolex VIP experience was the opportunity to meet the gracious and warm Roger Federer. During our conversation, I learned that this was Roger’s first time in Vancouver, and he has yet to try pickleball!
My Friday night concluded, with Roger sitting down with a full house at Roger’s Arena one year after his official retirement to answer questions from fans and included one special Facetime for his old rival and now friend, Rafael Nadal. It was another unforgettable day, crowned by the surreal memory of meeting Roger Federer.
Day 3, Saturday, September 23:
The first match on Saturday showcased each team’s top-ranked players, with Fritz and Rublev engaging in the tournament’s second tiebreaker, which Team World won, followed by Team Europe’s sole victory by Ruud. The day’s matches ended with my favourite doubles match featuring Team World’s Shelton and Auger-Aliassame. The chemistry between the players was palpable and the energy in the arena was infectious.
Day 4, Sunday, September 24:
Shelton and Tiafoe ended the tournament in grand fashion securing Team World’s win during the final doubles match.
Partaking in the Laver Cup in Vancouver was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. The combination of world-class tennis, a passionate crowd and the picturesque backdrop of Vancouver made it an unforgettable weekend.
If you are a tennis enthusiast, I highly recommend adding the Laver Cup to your bucket list. Beyond a tournament, it is a celebration of the sport and a testament to the global community of tennis fans who come together to share in the magic of the game.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Global Watch Company, Rolex Canada, and the city of Vancouver for their warm hospitality and for hosting an exceptional fan experience. I left the weekend with a heart full of cherished memories and a renewed love for the game of tennis.
